The devil is on the run and it is up to a damned
soul named Chaser (played by Dana Ashbrook) (who is employed by God) to
catch her and redeem himself before he can get into heaven. The devil
possesses the body of Maggie (Liane Alexandra Curtis), a haplessly meek
girl, turning her into a voluptuous vixen bent on mayhem, destruction, and
sucking the souls of any man unlucky enough to get in her path. Maggie’s
best friend, Diane (Lezlie Deane), joins Chaser in his mission to stop the
devil in her tracks.
I want to run through the streets proclaiming my love for
Girlfriend From Hell
but I’m too afraid that SHE might be out there. My first run in with Dan
Peterson’s wacky masterpiece was many, many years ago on late night cable.
Upon returning to this near-classic, I still find myself glued to the
screen from beginning to end. Yes, I now know that there is something wrong with me.
The occasionally inspired slapstick comedy makes up for some of the smarmy and forced cleverness
the script throws our way. I've found that laughing out loud and then immediately feeling
embarrassed is an odd sensation. Get used to it. In terms of the dialogue,
Girlfriend From Hell
turns trying too hard into an art form. Production values are fairly
decent but nothing to write home to mom about. Don’t let the 1990 tag fool
you, this one is all 80s, folks.
Performances are all played way over the top which is fitting but will
affect each viewer differently depending on their lactose tolerance. Did
you see what I did there? They’re cheesy! Get it? Wow, tough room. Anyway,
everyone is a good sport and the film seems like it was fun to make. As
far as nauseating sexual tension goes, Chaser and Diane are friggin’
golden. I hope I never see these two together in a film ever again.
Don’t ask me how it happened but Girlfriend From
Hell has stolen my soul. Am I under
the devil’s influence? Yes. Can I be trusted? No. Think of this as
Night Of The Demons
without the gore or the charm. If you actually bump into this movie, I ask
that you proceed with extreme caution. A nun with a bazooka is waiting for
you.
