Helen (played by Fiona Horsey) has some deep-rooted issues involving sex due to a horrific childhood incident. Her situation certainly deteriorates when her scumbag boyfriend decides to attempt to rape her while they’re out on a date. The career of this date rapist is cut short when he suddenly vanishes leaving only his clothes behind. Helen is understandably upset as she discovers that any man who sleeps with her is likely to be swallowed by her vagina. She flees to the big city in order to become a prostitute and feed the newly ravenous presence inside her. Trailing right behind her is Dennis (Paul Conway), a young man who has never been able to express his love for Helen. Dennis finds romance and maddening distraction in the form of Siamese twins (Amy and Beth Steel) while Helen finds a conniving husband. Soon, Helen and Dennis cross paths once again with disturbing and violent results.

Director Wolfgang Büld (Twisted Sisters) lets loose his
Angst upon the world and I couldn’t be happier. Well, maybe a little. Büld is quite a bold director and the exploitative insanity of this film is bound to have viewers’ jaws dropping more than a few times. Angst is shot on digital video but hardly looks cheap and the electronic score kicks ass. It’s hard not to get disoriented when the plot splits down the middle along the way following two characters (Helen and Dennis) on two completely different paths. Before these two storylines rejoin it is pretty clear that Büld easily could have turned each into their own film.

Fiona Horsey (Twisted Sisters) is quite good as Helen. I would like to have seen the look on her face when she read the script for this one. “So… my vagina eats blokes?” Anyway, her character goes through quite a transformation during the film while Paul Conway’s Dennis character remains quite pathetic throughout. Conway is a great actor who isn’t afraid to delve into the part of an instantly unlikable yet fascinating simp. Things get pretty nutty when he hooks up with stripper/bank robber Pinky played by the sexy Jaye Macaulay. Twin actresses Amy and Beth Steel are excellent as Siamese twins, Silvia and Sonia. One likes poetry and one likes porn. Classic. I couldn’t get enough of these two and I can’t help but wish these characters could have been expanded upon.

Meandering conclusion and wildly divergent plot aside (never a dull moment though),
Angst is a lot of twisted entertainment. The seemingly overbearing message that “men are evil” is overridden by the whole “vaginas are scary and will eat you whole” thing. Did I just write that? Yeah, there’s some pretty wild ways to read the subtext of this film but its way more fun than smart so I suggest leaving any lofty film criticism at the door. If you’re into the perversely bizarre and the unapologetically crass, then Angst is for you.
