Melvin Wong plays Ma Hsien-Sheng, a photographer and wannabe collector of priceless religious artifacts steals the statue of a demon while on a photo shoot. That night he tries to have a one night stand with the model, Shu Ya (Wai Man Chun), but pass out drunk. That night, the demon whose soul was trapped in the statue has its way with Shu Ya. The next morning, Shu Ya and Ma wake up thinking that they had sex. A few months later, Shu Ya approaches Ma to tell him she is pregnant with his child. Not wanting his girlfriend, Li Ting Ting (Hing Yue Chang), the daughter of a priest, to know, Ma takes Shu Ya to an abortion clinic. When the doctor tries to abort the pregnancy, the demon makes its presence known and attacks the clinic. Ma flees and goes back to his life.

Months later, after Ma and Li Ting Ting are married, Shu Ya returns again, this time begging him to take her to the hospital so she can have the baby. Ma agrees but on the way there, Shu Ya goes beserk in the car and causes them to crash. Ma is thrown from the car but Shu Ya remains inside while the car catches fire and she burns to death, cursing Ma the entire time. At the hospital, a group of doctors begin an autopsy on Shu Ya's burnt corpse but the demon's baby is alive and well and escapes to wreak havoc on Ma and Li Ting Ting. Suddenly, all manner of spirit, monster, and zombie begin to materialize at Li Ting Ting's father's temple. Even Shu Ya's burned body returns from the grave to punish all those who sinned against her.

The Rape After is sick, depressing, and all points in between. The gore effects are goopy and the atmosphere is dark, creepy, and gloomy. The characters aren't particularly well developed but the complicated (yet not complex) plot plays out so fast and so loose that there isn't any time for us to get acquainted with these poor souls. Characters are either damned to begin with, have some sins in the past that must be punished, or are innocents dragged into the inescapable horror through no fault of their own. The soundtrack is quite creepy and adds another layer onto the suffocating and claustrophobic malaise that surrounds this film.

May I take a moment to reflect upon the glory that is Shu Ya? This poor wretch isn't just a sex toy for a creature from hell, the mother of a demon baby, nor is she merely a charred zombie bent on revenge. No, sir, Shu Ya just happens to be the daughter of a syphilitic and murderous mother, daughter to a philandering (and also syphilitic) father, and sister to a retarded and deformed younger brother named Doggie (look, I don't know how syphilis works but yeah he's got it too). Take notice boys: they just don't make women like Shu Ya anymore. Because the world would end!

No, there is no escape from The Rape After. Even if the nightmare seems to be over by the end credits, viewers will likely be left with very few happy thoughts when this one is finished. Filled with spells, curses, abortions, freaky ghost kids, zombies, torn off ears, demon rape (well, it looked sort of consensual), possessed rats, etc. The Rape After is a prime example of nasty Hong Kong supernatural splatter with some heavy atmosphere to boot. Thanks for the frog-vomiting and please don't think that I'm not grateful for the syphilis.
