Mail Order Bride
Directed By David Quitmeyer
Released: 2006
Starring: Caroline Pierce, Corey Foxx, Roger Gobin, and Torey Foxx
Running Time: 36 minutes

Steve (Corey Foxx) is one lonely guy. His job as a computer programmer affords him the opportunity to try out the new PC (Personal Concubine) 2000, a state of the art love machine. When the PC 2000 (played by Caroline Pierce) arrives, it looks more like the bride of Frankenstein than the commercial promised but Steve isn’t picky so he decides to give it a go anyway. Due to the fact that the doll mimics anything she sees on TV, the instructions explicitly state not to let the PC 2000 see any violent images but through some VCR tomfoolery, a horror movie marathon plays for the doll’s instruction instead of a porno film. Steve gets quite a surprise when he comes home from work to find that his artificial companion has learned several new tricks.

Mail Order Bride comes from indie horror director David Quitmeyer who brought us the sick and twisted Slaughter Disc. This film is much more subdued than Quitmeyer’s debut but the sick humor and gore are present to keep this from one being tame. Thank God. The corny (on purpose) script features some great moments infused with crass humor and the movie-within-a-movie scenes are well done.

Performances aren’t Oscar material but it’s easy to see that everyone involved was giving their best and having fun with the production. The very hot Caroline Pierce plays the PC 2000 quite well and her robotic striptease is great. Corey Foxx’s character, Steve, is suitably pathetic and definitely not one of those “Ah, poor guy” kinds of pathetic either. No, he’s pretty much a scumbag which keeps the movie from entering the artsy ironic zone. I really liked Torey Foxx’s Donald, Steve’s brother who knows how to manhandle a VCR and polish off a bottle of booze like it’s nobody’s business.

An amusing, sexy, and fun short horror film that made me actually wish it was a full length feature (good compliment!). According to the Steel Web Studios website,
Mail Order Bride will be included on the Tales from the Carnal Morgue: Volume 1 DVD and there are plans to develop the story into a feature length film. I’m hoping that Quitmeyer and company will be able to flesh out the story even more next time. Get it? Flesh! Ah, forget it.
