Scott Loomis (Jason Christ) occasionally breaks into women’s houses,
knocks them out with chloroform, and then takes nude photos of them while
they’re unconscious. Aside from being a sexual predator, Scott also
happens to be a complete loser who is unable to hold a job or patch things
up with his ex. As he molests more women in their homes, the media takes
particular interest in the case and it becomes increasingly harder for him
to continue his sick games.
Zert Sineca directs this freaky and kinky indie flick. Even though I think
“Portrait Of A Nutbar” would have made a better title, Bizarre Lust Of
A Sexual Deviant captures the spirit of this film just fine. After a
brief black and white introduction, Bizarre Lust explodes into an
assault of colored and strobe lights jolting enough to capture the
attention of the comatose. The editing is experimental and serves the tone
of the film without being overly distracting. Disturbing electronic pieces
and trashy string arrangements make up the film’s score and they couldn’t
be more appropriate. The entire film could have been ruined by some nu-metal
garbage (as anyone watching modern horror films will tell you).
For many viewers, it will be easy to dismiss this film as pure titillation
but Jason Christ’s performance gives Bizarre Lust Of A Sexual Deviant
an edge over many films that are simply showcases for various fetishes. He
shows a human side to his character that doesn’t inspire pity or sympathy
but merely presents what a person with issues (to put it very lightly)
such as Scott Loomis might actually be like in real life. Loomis is truly
pathetic in that he is too terrified to act (sexually) even when he is
completely in control of the situation and he can’t even keep up a normal
façade for the outside world. Christ puts everything into the role and it
is one of the finer performances I’ve seen in indie horror in a while.
While Bizarre Lust certainly has a good atmosphere and mood, it
does lack in the dramatic department. While the scene with Mary (played by
the fearless Emily Haack) and her boyfriend (Scot Spookytooth) is
touching, it goes on far too long. And while the scene does humanize
Scott’s victims, it leaves one wanting to see the aftermath of this
terrible act of rape (Loomis’ impotence notwithstanding) and to see how
Mary ends up. The biggest problem the film has comes during Scott and
Angie’s (Lisa A. Morrison) confrontation. The scene feels overwritten,
forced, and ultimately, a letdown after the daring and unflinching buildup
of tension.
Bizarre Lust Of A Sexual Deviant is not going to please many
viewers but damn, it’s going to piss some people off which I’m sure will
delight its filmmakers. Although the attack scenes feature some very
lovely ladies, they don’t come off as erotic or particularly exciting.
They are depressing and cruel while they show just how disturbed the main
character truly is. The film unfolds slowly but maintains its tension
effectively and is not easily forgotten once it’s over. Despite its
faults, Bizarre Lust is for the brave viewer out there who can
appreciate a good indie effort.
DVD Specs:
Even though it’ll make you feel dirty, Bizarre Lust Of A Sexual Deviant
looks crisp and clean in its full frame format. The sound is adequate and
the dialogue is easy to understand. There is an amusing and informative
feature commentary from the film’s star, Jason Christ, who talks about the
story behind the production and even heckles himself. There is a very
short behind the scenes feature, a stills gallery, and some previews for
other Sub Rosa flicks.
