Cory (Jason Contini) and Jeff (Eric Spudic) are drinking in Jeff's parents' kitchen when they begin talking about the torment they suffered in high school. They decide to get some disguises and weapons together in order to scare their old bullies. After accidentally killing the first victim on their list, Cory and Jeff decide that there is no turning back and that they are naturally adept at wreaking deadly vengeance upon their old high school enemies. As their list of names grows longer and longer, distrust begins to grow between the two friends and soon there will be hell to pay.

Killers By Nature opens with director/star Eric Spudic masturbating to internet porn while eating a sandwich. Okay, I just wanted to start with that. This indie revenge fantasy gone awry does a great job building tension and is filmed decently. Nearly the entire film takes place in broad daylight so there definitely aren’t any lighting issues to speak of. Although some viewers may take issue with the film’s pointless violence (and trust me, it is pretty darn pointless) and there’s no discernable message behind Killers By Nature. It's just plain wrong and if you're looking for that kind of a guilty pleasure then this is your movie.

Contini and Spudic make for an interesting pair in the film. They manage to portray a pair of losers who are on the brink of violence quite successfully. One of the best scenes is when they Jeff and Cory leave one of their victims lying on the sidewalk for a couple of hours and none of their neighbors or passersby spots the dead body. There’s no way this is an oversight since the characters themselves mention how stupid it was to leave a body in plain sight.

There is something endearing about Killers By Nature. It has a little to do with its low budget seat-of-your-pants creativity and a great deal more to do with the heartfelt performances of the main actors involved. The film is silly but looked as though it was a great deal of fun to shoot. It is very likely that the film is going to have a polarizing effect on indie horror fans. This is either a hit or a dud depending on your tastes. I had a good time watching Killers By Nature but I suspect that the filmmaker has aspirations for this film to be an underground classic (check out the drinking game on the DVD). Just don't let the machine guns on the cover fool you.

DVD Stuff

This Sub Rosa DVD looks decent in its full frame presentation and the audio is decent (some of the dialogue is hard to hear). There is an interesting feature length audio commentary with director, writer, producer, Eric Spudic, where he talks about writing Killers By Nature and how the project came about. Other extras include a stills gallery, trailers for Sub Rosa and Wicked Pixel films, and there’s even a drinking game to play during the film.
