When an airplane carrying a very unstable Ice Age woman (Ami Chorlton), crashes into a mountain, it causes an avalanche, burying a ski resort. The woman awakes, mutated from her beautiful visage to a scaly creature bent on murdering every warm-blooded human being she comes into contact with. The survivors of the avalanche must find a way out of the resort before the Ice Queen freezes them all to death.

The cast is adequate but Johnny, played by Harmon Walsh, is the least likeable hero I’ve seen in a while. Shortly before he can be seen standing up against a pitiless and bloodthirsty ice monster, he throws his future fiancée’s rent money away on booze and tramps. Johnny’s self-deprecating soliloquies just aren’t enough to help his case either. The guy is a loser. Both of the women in his life, his girlfriend, Tori (Noelle Reno), and his one night stand, Elaine (Jennifer Hill), are way too good for this guy.

The special effects are ambitious beyond the film’s budget, utilizing models and editing to pull off some of the harrier moments. The Ice Queen herself looks pretty good although she is over-lit throughout the entire film. It’s a shame too because the gorgeous Chorlton really gets into her part. Come to think of it, the lightning and the cinematography are both weak and do nothing for a film already lacking in the style department.

Ice Queen is a fun but awkward horror film. The monster is shown much too early in the film and in such great detail that limits her potential of ever being scary. The performances are dry in a film that practically begs for over-the-top antics from the cast. The gratuitous nudity (ouch, those are some precarious-looking implants) in the beginning and the brief moments of gore help a little but fail to get the wheels turning. If only there could have been a second wet t-shirt contest to bookend the film. I recommend watching Ice Queen with friends and lots of beer. And chips, bring some chips.
