Hell Of The Living Dead Directed by Bruno Mattei Released: 1980 Starring: Margit Evelyn Newton, Franco Garofalo, and Selan Karay Running Time: 101 minutes A spill at a chemical plant causes the dead to rise in Papa New Guinea. A team of soldiers is sent to investigate and once there they run into a TV crew investigating the mysterious phenomena. All hell breaks loose as the entire area is overrun with the flesh hungry dead. In this stock footage laden masterpiece of borrowed Goblin soundtracks, Bruno Mattei proves himself to be one of the worst Italian horror directors of all time. All of the jungle sequences are painful and usually out of context with the action of the film. In fact, some of the tribal footage is more disturbing than any of the gore effects. None of the actors involved are worth their paychecks; I’m assuming that they were paid at all. The characters spend no time whatsoever debating the moral implications of shooting zombies. However, they do seem to forget to shoot them in the head right after they establish that it’s the only way to kill them. Margit Evelyn Newton (who plays journalist Lia Rousseau) takes her clothes off in order to establish communication with the natives and in order to establish interest in the male viewers.
Hell Of The Living Dead is only for the hardcore fans of zombie flicks or the hardcore fans of Italian garbage. The only crime this film doesn’t commit is being dull. It’s not boring but it’s completely ridiculous. None of the characters are interesting and the movie has so much distracting stock footage that it’s just embarrassing. When you’ve seen every other Euro zombie flick, wait a year or two, then watch this one. |
