Hellblock 13
Directed by Paul Talbot
Released: 2000
Starring: Debbie Rochon and Gunnar Hansen
Tara (Debbie Rochon) tells this trilogy of horror stories to her executioner (Gunnar Hansen of
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) while awaiting her appointment with the electric chair. The first tale is about a woman whose children are missing but she seems to know more than she is letting on. The second tale is about a trailer park wife who wants to teach her abusive husband a lesson by turning to the local witch for help. Finally, a group of bikers pay tribute to one of their fallen members who will rise from the grave to protect them.
These horror trilogies sure are going around, aren't they? This one is as independent as it gets and director, Paul Talbot, knows how to please the straight-to-video crowd. Some gore, some goofy rednecks, some predictably ironic twist endings, a brief lesbian love scene, and scream queen Debbie Rochon (not in lesbian love scene) are what you're getting here.
The best of the three stories is the second tale, "White Trash Love Story", mainly because it is the (intentionally) funniest of the three. It's pretty offensive but the plight of Heidi Mae is one that you have to see to believe. The first story about the negligent mother and the third, "Big Rhonda", compete for being the hardest sections to sit through.
Overall, when it comes to watching Hellblock 13, Debbie Rochon fans and Gunnar Hansen fans need only apply. Their chemistry in the sections before and after each story is a must see for indie horror fanatics. I think the fact that Troma carries this title may be a little misleading for some. This isn't the gorefest along the lines of some of their other titles
(Terror Firmer) nor is it a T&A meltdown. If nothing else, this is a good time waster and can be fun for the less jaded.
